The Main Street Approach
The Main Street Approach is centered around Transformation Strategies. A Transformation Strategy articulates a focused, deliberate path to revitalizing or strengthening a downtown or commercial district’s economy.
Transformation Strategies
Transformational Strategies are generated through meaningful community engagement and informed by an analysis of the district’s market position — help to guide a revitalization program’s work. An effective Transformation Strategy serves a particular customer segment, responds to an underserved market demand, or creates a differentiated destination.
Transformation Strategies are implemented through comprehensive work in four broad areas, known as the Four Points.

Launched by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the trail is divided into eight regions—Western, Northwest, Southwest, Piedmont-Triad, North Central, Sandhills, Northeast, and Southeast—each showcasing vibrant downtown districts filled with architectural gems, locally owned shops, restaurants, cultural attractions, and outdoor recreation opportunities
Visitors can use the trail to plan trips that combine historic charm with modern amenities, from hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains to sampling local cuisine and attending community events.
